Towards the end of the classic 1935 essay »The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction«, Walter Benjamin addresses the dangerous potential of film. Here, quoting Georges Duhamel, Benjamin alludes to a kind of epistemological recalibration or belief entrainment: »I can no longer think what I want to think. My thoughts have been replaced by moving images.« Nearly a century on from these reflections, this talk considers difficult questions to do with musical manipulation and audiovisual control mechanisms in the age of CapCut, TikTok, and fascist contemporary politics. During the last few years, online music cultures have developed in which audiovisual content is strategically entangled with far-right political sentiment and conspiratorial imaginaries. After beginning with a brief consideration of ‘brainrot’ rhetoric vis-à-vis TikTok’s platform affordances and Frankfurt School critical theory, the talk presents case studies and critical perspectives from the latest work on audiovisual propaganda and the politicization of music. During the 2010s, remixes of the right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones anticipated the distinctive audiovisual aesthetics of the present, especially in terms of kinediegetic formulae. The affordances of CapCut editing software have further consolidated these tendencies, as will be illustrated through considerations of user edits that romanticize hypermasculinity, and that seek to synthesize white supremacist sentiment in Germany and throughout Europe. To close, the recent phenomenon of GenAI musical ‘slopaganda’ is considered with reference to far-right politics in the UK and longstanding ideas about musical beauty. Both digital methods of online reception analysis and knowledge of the history of aesthetics are needed in order to critically analyse the AI-generated voices and dancing bodies of today’s populist pop stars.
