Scientific and artistic research is one of the core tasks of our university. As individual research at the institutes, in permanent facilities, in temporary projects and conferences and as part of our doctoral programme, it is firmly anchored in everyday university life, whereby the participation of students through research-based learning is particularly important to us.
Through the proximity to art practice, research fields can be penetrated that remain closed to purely theoretical approaches. At the same time, impulses from research enrich artistic practice. Interdisciplinarity and the transfer of results to the public are fundamental building blocks of our understanding of research.
Research at HMTM focuses on musicology (in particular on the topics of music and dictatorship, Ben Haim, the culture of remembrance for Jewish music and Jewish musicians in Bavaria, the music of forgotten composers, music and its interpretation in a social context), artificial intelligence in the cultural sector, music psychology, musician’s medicine, music and media, music mediation, sound art, digital communication, ethnomusicology, music education and instrumental and vocal pedagogy.
In order to promote scientific and artistic research at HMTM, the university has reorganised its research activities as a whole: Dean of Research Prof. Dr. Friedrich Geiger, Vice President Prof. Dr. Sonja Stibi and the Forum Research with the elected Research Commission as the decision-making body on the use of resources from the Research Fund are responsible for the Research Department.
The Forum Research offers an open platform for the university community to develop and share interdisciplinary research ideas and projects. Lecturers and administrative staff from all disciplines are welcome here to promote transdisciplinary exchange and enrich the university’s research landscape. It is headed by the spokespersons Prof. Dr. Nicolas Ruth and Prof. Dr. Christine Dettmann.
The HMTM Research Commission makes decisions in the field of research, manages the research fund and implements projects on behalf of the Forum Research. The members are Vice President Prof. Dr. Sonja Stibi, Dean of Research Prof. Dr. Friedrich Geiger and the elected representatives of the Research Forum Prof. Dr. Nicolas Ruth, Prof. Dr. Christine Dettmann and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Till Bovermann.
The library, the university archive and the Ben Haim Research Centre provide infrastructure and resources as well as source material such as collections, partial estates and archival materials.
