Born in Kempten (Allgäu), conductor Daniel Johannes Mayr studied teacher training in music education (schools) and conducting at the University of Music Würzburg under Prof. Hans Rainer Förster and Prof. Peter Falk. He was a lecturer at the Opera School in Würzburg and répétiteur at the Mainfranken Theater. He also held teaching positions at the University of the Arts in Bremen and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (University of Music in Detmold), where he conducted concert projects with the university orchestra.
Since the winter semester of 2025/2026, Daniel Johannes Mayr has held the Professorship for Musical Direction at the Opera School at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich.
After initial permanent engagements at the Komische Oper Berlin as deputy choir director under GMD Kirill Petrenko, as choir director and kapellmeister at the Theater Nordhausen and in the same role at the Theater Bremen, Daniel Johannes Mayr joined the Opera Bonn. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as musical assistant to choir director Eberhard Friedrich at the Bayreuth Festival and is associated with the Bonn Academic Orchestra as a conductor.
Daniel Johannes Mayr has been engaged as First Coordinated Conductor at Theater Bonn since the 2017/18 season and, since the 2025/26 season, has held the position of the First Conductor in addition to his part-time professorship at the HMTM.
Daniel Johannes Mayr is passionate about bringing music to children and young people. In addition to family operas, he conducts and presents many family and children’s concerts with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn.
