International degree-seeking students

The University of Music and Theatre Munich supports all international students in preparing for and completing their studies in Munich. The »internationals@home« program offers a wide range of support and advice.

The International Office offers an open consultation hour for international students (starting in winter semester 2024/25):

    At our university, the language of instruction is German. For many degree programs, you must therefore provide proof of your German language skills. You can find out which level you need on the relevant page of your degree course in the section Study > Course options.

  • Welcome Days

    Orientation days are organised for all new students at the beginning of the winter semester. In the winter semester 2024/25, these will take place from October 9-13, 2024. The program will be published here in September.

  • German Language Courses

    The University of Music and Theatre Munich offers the following German language courses:

    Intensive language courses before the start of studies:
    September 30 to October 8, 2024

    Language courses during the semester (German as a foreign language):
    Elective courses:

    • Beginners (A1): Thursday, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
    • Advanced (B1): Thursday, 11:30-13:00
    • Advanced (B2/C1): Thursday, 13:00-14:30

  • Learning Material Music theory/ theory of musical form #gis

    The seminar »#gis – Basics for international students« is a project of the International Office of HMTM. It is aimed at international students on Bachelor’s degree courses.

    The seminar includes learning units from two areas:

    1. For the subject of music theory, there are introductory videos on the topics of »basso continuo«, »scale-step theory« and »function theory«.
    2. For theory of musical form, the four-part series “Syntactic units” is available.

    At the centre of each learning unit is an animated explanatory video. The script and a vocabulary list with technical terms are available for download for each video.

    The German texts in the videos correspond to language level B1 and are subtitled in German.

    The content shall build a bridge between the basic knowledge and the music theory modules in the artistic degree programs.
