International degree-seeking students

The University of Music and Theatre Munich supports all international students in preparing for and completing their studies in Munich. The »internationals@home« program offers a wide range of support and advice.

The International Office offers consultation hours for international prospective and current students by appointment. Here you can get advice on all aspects of your studies. We are also happy to assist you with matters relating to the Foreigners Office (Servicestelle für Zuwanderung und Einbürgerung).

The University of Music and Theatre Munich offers the following German language courses:
- Intensive German courses before the start of studies:
  September 29 to October 5, 2025
  Further information about the courses and registration will be sent by e-mail to all new international students.
- German courses during the semester:
  Beginners (A1): Thursday, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
  Advanced (B1): Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
  Advanced (B2/C1): Thursday, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
  
  The German courses during the semester are regular courses that can be booked as compulsory electives via e-Office.
The seminar »#gis – Grundlagen für internationale Studierende« is a project of the International Office of HMTM. It is aimed at international students on Bachelor’s degree programmes.

The seminar includes learning units from two areas:
1. For the subject Musiktheorie, there are introductory videos on the topics of »Generalbass«, »Stufentheorie« and »Funktionstheorie«.
2. For Formenlehre, the four-part series »Syntaktische Einheiten« is available.
At the centre of each learning unit is an animated explanatory video. The script and a vocabulary list with technical terms are available for download for each video.

The German texts in the videos correspond to language level B1 and are subtitled in German.

The content shall build a bridge between the basic knowledge and the music theory modules in the artistic degree programs.
