Jörn Marcussen-Wulff has been appointed Professor of Big Band Conducting at the Institute for Teacher Training in Music Education (Schools) at our university. The multi-award-winning composer, arranger, trombonist and conductor will take up his post on 15 February 2026.
In his professorship, Jörn Marcussen-Wulff focuses in particular on musical work in schools:
»The topics of improvisation and interaction have great potential for music teaching in schools. Jazz and popular music are particularly well suited to this educational work. Teachers need the right tools for this. I am very pleased that I can start right here with my professorship. I hope that my own enthusiasm will encourage students to form and lead their own big bands in the future. My responsibility as a teacher is to create good conditions for healthy group dynamics and individual development by ensuring a high degree of transparency in my decisions and actions.«
Jörn Marcussen-Wulff most recently taught composition, arrangement, jazz theory and big band at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar. He is the artistic director of the professional big band »Fette Hupe«, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany (Bujazzo) and the Hamburg State Youth Jazz Orchestra.
He regularly works for well-known jazz orchestras (e.g. NDR Big Band, HR Big Band, Metropole Orkest, Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Subway Jazz Orchestra, Spielvereinigung Süd, etc.) and is an internationally sought-after lecturer for masterclasses and further training courses. His music represents the new zeitgeist of European big band arrangers who break with convention and seek and find their own musical language in the jazz orchestra format. His arrangements can be found on many successful releases, including the album »If you really want« by Raul Midón & the Metropole Orkest, which was nominated for a Grammy.
Jörn Marcussen-Wulff studied teacher training in music education (schools) and jazz trombone in Hanover and Lucerne, as well as jazz composition in Mannheim. He was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany and the Schleswig-Holstein State Youth Jazz Orchestra. He was also a finalist in the Hessischer Rundfunk’s »Jazzpositions 2010« composition competition and participated in the renowned Metropole Orkest Arrangers Workshop with Richard Bona and Vince Mendoza in 2013. He has received the composition scholarship of the State of Lower Saxony several times. He is a prize winner of the Jazz Promotion Prize of the Kulturforum Schleswig-Holstein. Most recently, he received the Music Education Promotion Prize for the production »Jazzcape Room« with Fette Hupe.
