Internationalisation of the Jazz Institute

Jazz education lives from international networking. Through study stays abroad and contact with international students, students can gain valuable intercultural experience, carry out projects with musicians from other countries, and forge contacts for their future artistic work.

With this in mind, the Jazz Institute has been systematically expanding its international partnerships since 2013 in order to provide students access to a broad international network while they are still studying.

The Jazz Institute regularly grants places for international study visits and projects. The opportunities range from full academic semesters to shorter periods of study. The institutions with which the Institute collaborates include the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston, the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood (CMDL) in Paris, the Mongolian State Conservatory in Ulaanbaatar as well as the EMESP Tom Jobim and the Faculdade de Música Souza Lima in São Paulo. It also maintains close ties with the Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ).

The Kurt Maas Jazz Award, which takes place every two years, also offers students the opportunity to gain international experience, as the first prize is a summer study programme at Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA) and the second prize is a study visit to Brazil at EMESP Tom Jobim and the Faculdade de Música Souza Lima (São Paulo).

Additionally, in 2023 the Kurt Maas Jazz Scholarship was awarded for the first time. With the support of the donor Camilo Dornier, the Jazz Institute uses this scholarship to invite two young musicians from Brazil to Munich every two years to work together.

In addition to the Jazz Institute’s regular course offerings, our students have the opportunity to organise their own stays abroad and develop their own artistic projects. In doing so, they can draw on the HMTM’s global network. The Jazz Institute supports them in finding the right contact persons, in planning and in assessing funding opportunities such as Erasmus+, PROMOS or the Mark Lothar Foundation.
