The Church Music course at the University of Music and Theatre Munich is artistically demanding, varied and practice-oriented. Numerous prestigious posts at major churches and cathedrals in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy are held by graduates of the HMTM, bearing witness to the consistently high standard of education over many years. Opportunities for work experience placements are available by arrangement with the teaching staff.

A wide-ranging artistic curriculum, opportunities to perform on instruments of various stylistic orientations (the Great Concert Hall, the Kuhn organ III/52; St Bonifaz, the Mühleisen organ III/51, etc.), organ field trips to significant historical and modern instruments, improvisation concerts, and the organisation of church services
Singing, scientific foundations (semiology, palaeography, modology), musical interpretation and analysis, choral singing and schola conducting, training for cantors including individual voice training
Piano/harpsichord, singing, basso continuo and score reading, children’s and youth choir conducting, jazz, popular music and contemporary sacred music, music theory/church music composition, aural training, liturgy and hymnology, musicology subjects.
Students on the master’s course in Church Music choose a specialisation from the following subjects: organ repertoire, organ improvisation, choral conducting, orchestral conducting, Gregorian chant, vocal studies, piano, harpsichord or composition for church music.
It is possible to combine this with a parallel degree course in organ as a major, subject to suitability.
The size of the university allows for a wide range of interdisciplinary opportunities, such as collaboration with the Institute for Historical Performance or additional courses including the Alexander Technique, cultural and self-management, lecture series, etc.
