Biography

Conductor and choir director

In his work as a conductor and choir director, Markus Bauer performs with many different orchestras, choirs and ensembles. As the director of three vocal ensembles, vocal literature from all eras is an integral part of his work – from a cappella music to choral symphonies. He is constantly expanding his repertoire in the purely instrumental world of sound – most recently with the Munich Symphony Orchestra and Vanhals’ Double Bass Concerto and the New South German Philharmonic Orchestra with Dvorak’s 8th Symphony. He attaches particular importance to historically informed performance practice. He works with orchestras such as the Baroque orchestra La Banda, Concerto München and L’ Arpa Festante. World premieres by contemporary composers such as Wolfram Buchenberg, Matthias Rehfeldt, Andreas Begert, Lucia Birzer and Matthias Deger show how much he is inspired and stimulated by music from the present day. Markus Bauer also has a long-standing collaboration with the Munich ensemble Vokalzirkel München. He is the artistic director of the concert series Festlicher Sommer in der Wies and most recently opened the Dorfen Festival.
In August 2025, Markus Bauer made his debut at the European Weeks.

Lecturer in choir and ensemble conducting

In addition to his own career as a conductor, Markus Bauer pursues his teaching activities with great joy and passion. On the one hand, he trains prospective choir conductors at the Bavarian Singers’ Association, where he teaches seminar participants; as a lecturer at the University of Music and Theatre Munich, where he accompanies and supports students on their way to becoming professional artists and teachers. There he teaches choir and ensemble conducting. He also passes on his knowledge and skills with great commitment in seminars and further training courses organised by singers’ associations and the Bavarian State Ministry of Education.

Education

Born in Erding, Markus Bauer began his musical training on the piano and French horn. After graduating from high school, he completed his choir director training at the Bavarian Singers’ Association with distinction. He then studied Teacher Training in Music Education and Choral Conducting with Prof. Martin Steidler and Prof. Michael Gläser at the University of Music and Theatre Munich.
