Biography

Jan Broeckx has been director of the Ballet Academy at the University of Music and Theatre Munich since 2010. Born in Belgium, he trained as a dancer at the Royal Ballet School Antwerp and won the Prix de Lausanne in 1978 at the age of 17. This was followed by contracts as principal dancer (from 1978 to 1986 with the Opera Ballet Flanders, from 1981 to 1985 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and subsequently with the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich) as well as guest engagements with the London Festival Ballet, La Scala in Milan and Het Nationaal Ballet Amsterdam, among others. He was also a very welcome soloist at major gala events.

In 1982, Roland Petit saw him dance and brought Jan Broeckx to the Ballet National de Marseille, first as a guest and later as a danseur étoile. During their long collaboration, he interpreted numerous roles in Petit’s ballets and, as one of his closest associates, studied his works worldwide in renowned theatres such as the Paris Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Bolshoi and the Kirov Ballet. In collaboration with his mentor, he founded the École National Supérieur de Danse Marseille. He also worked as a choreographer and dancer with Rudolf Nureyev, George Balanchine, John Cranko, Hans van Manen, Ronald Hynd, Peter Schaufuss and Jiri Kylian, among others.

Jan Broeckx’s reputation as a dancer, teacher and choreographic assistant has made him an internationally renowned jury member at competitions. Commissions for film and television, as well as work as a ballet master, complement his work.
