Biography

Jörn Marcussen-Wulff is a multi-award-winning composer, arranger, trombonist and conductor from Hanover. He is the managing director and artistic director of the renowned professional big band »Fette Hupe«, as well as artistic director of the Bundesjazzorchester (Bujazzo). Following teaching posts at the University of Music and Theatre Hannover and the HfM Franz Liszt Weimar, Jörn Marcussen-Wulff has been Professor of Big Band Conducting at the HMTM since 2026.

He studied music education and jazz trombone in Hanover and Lucerne, as well as jazz composition at the Mannheim University of Music, and was a member of the Bundesjazzorchester, the Schleswig-Holstein State Youth Jazz Orchestra and the European Movement Jazz Orchestra.

Jörn Marcussen-Wulff regularly works with renowned jazz orchestras (e.g. the NDR Big Band, the HR Big Band, the Metropole Orkest, amongst others) and, as one of Germany’s leading big band conductors, is also in high demand internationally as a lecturer for masterclasses and professional development courses (e.g. the Film Scoring Academy of Europe, GMPU Klagenfurt, YAMAHA, amongst others).

His music embodies the new spirit of the times among European big band composers, who break with convention and seek – and find – their own musical language and expression within the jazz orchestra format. His arrangements feature on successful releases, such as the album »If You Really Want« by Raul Midón & the Metropole Orkest, which was nominated for a Grammy.
