Prof. Lydia Grün is President of the University of Music and Theatre Munich. Since October 2025, she has also been Honorary President of the German Music Council.
Before joining the HMTM, she taught as a professor of music education at the HfM Detmold, where she was also Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer. From 2017 to 2021, she served as an expert on the Council for Cultural Education. As managing director of Netzwerk Junge Ohren e.V., she was committed to promoting the importance of music in a diverse society from 2013 to 2019. Prior to that, she was a music consultant and deputy head of department at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture from 2008 to 2012 and, since 2011, managing director of Musikland Niedersachsen.
In addition to her extensive experience in teaching, cultural management and cultural policy, Prof. Lydia Grün has published numerous articles in public broadcasting. In April 2025, she was awarded the special prize of the German Orchestras’ Unisono Culture Prize for her outstanding commitment to transparency, awareness-raising and prevention in the areas of abuse of power, discrimination and sexualised violence. Prof. Lydia Grün studied musicology, journalism, communication sciences and journalism at the University of Leipzig, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin.
