About the Jazz Institute

The Jazz Institute was founded at the end of the 1980s at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich by musician and Berklee graduate Kurt Maas and has been part of the University of Music and Theatre Munich (HMTM), the largest state arts university in Bavaria, since 2008. It is an important centre for successful and internationally oriented jazz education in Germany. The alumni of the Jazz Institute include many well-known personalities from the regional and national jazz scene.

Today, around 80 talented young musicians from around 20 different countries study at the Jazz Institute on the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in jazz, the Master’s degree course in jazz education or the young studies programme. Particularly talented musicians can deepen their studies in a masterclass.

An internationally orientated network with partner institutions all over the world creates unique opportunities for students, such as workshops with contemporary, international jazz artists, an intensive exchange with partner universities, collaboration in interdisciplinary projects and numerous performance opportunities outside the university.

»Jazz is always both an examination of tradition and a search for new possibilities of expression, a crossing of boundaries and a merging of different musical movements. With this in mind, we at the HMTM Jazz Institute offer space for research and experimentation – and thus for the future-oriented development of jazz. Our aim is to accompany our students on their individual artistic path and to prepare them as well as possible for their future careers as professional musicians and teachers.«
