Our university’s VOLTA Ensemble – a chamber orchestra for dance theatre and film projects, often in collaboration with the Ballet Academy – was founded in 2019 by Prof Mark Pogolski and is based on the principle of a 19th century salon orchestra: The core of the VOLTA ensemble is a string section with piano and percussion, which can be expanded with individual wind instruments, harp as well as folk instruments.
The orchestra enables students to gain important experience in dance theatre. At the same time, it offers ballet students the opportunity to perform more often with live musical accompaniment. Under the direction of Prof. Mark Pogolski, the orchestra plays regularly at the Heinz-Bosl-Matinees at the Nationaltheater as well as at the Ballet Academy’s performances at the Prinzregententheater, Carl Orff Auditorium and the Reaktorhalle with works from the classical and contemporary repertoire. The orchestra also regularly participates in film events with live music as part of the »Stummfilm in der Reaktorhalle« (Silent Film in the Reaktorhalle) event series in cooperation with the Munich Film Museum.
The VOLTA Ensemble consists of selected students from the instrumental Bachelor and Master degree courses as well as students of Teacher Training courses. In principle, it is open to all interested students at the university. ECTS points are awarded for participation in the elective area. Registration for upcoming projects is possible via eOffice (course »VOLTA Ensemble«).
