Prof. Lydia Grün has been President of the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts since October 2022. Prior to joining the HMTM, she taught as a professor of music education at the Detmold University of Music, where she also served as Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer. From 2017 to 2021, she served as an expert on the Council for Cultural Education. As Managing Director of Netzwerk Junge Ohren e.V., she championed the importance of music in a diverse society from 2013 to 2019. Prior to that, from 2008 to 2012, she worked as a music officer and deputy head of department at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, and had also been managing director of Musikland Niedersachsen since 2011. Since October 2025, Prof. Lydia Grün has been honorary president of the German Music Council.
Prof. Lydia Grün studied musicology, journalism, communication sciences and journalism at the University of Leipzig, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin. In April 2025, she was awarded the Special Prize of the unisono Culture Prize of the German Orchestras for her outstanding commitment to transparency, raising awareness and prevention in relation to the issues of abuse of power, discrimination and sexualised violence.
