Research at the Institute

The persecution of musicians by the Nazi regime has permanently altered musical life worldwide – both through the losses suffered and through the creative developments that took place in exile. This long-term project investigates these global upheavals, whilst expanding the freely accessible encyclopaedia of musicians persecuted during the Nazi era (LexM) with new findings and interactive geodata visualisations.

A collaborative project between the »Akademie der Wissenschaften Hamburg«, the University of Hamburg and the University of Music and Theatre Munich (Ben-Haim-Forschungszentrum), funded under the Academies Programme.

The project examines the work of Jewish cultural figures who were evacuated to Tashkent following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and were tasked with creating works there until 1943 to provide moral support to the population. The focus is on their experiences in musical theatre – ranging from the prosopographical documentation of the individuals involved, through the analysis of the works produced, to the question of how Jewish themes and latent antisemitism were reflected in the music. The musicological perspective is deliberately interwoven with approaches from history, art history and literary studies.
