Madrigalchor

The Madrigalchor of the University of Music and Theatre Munich is one of the central ensembles of our university and has been directed by Prof. Martin Steidler since 2008. Every year, around 60-70 selected students perform great works of the European choral tradition at the highest level, including rarely performed or contemporary repertoire.

Students qualify for the Madrigalchor through an internal audition, which is possible from the 3rd semester onwards. Most of the choir members study Teacher Training courses, Church Music or Choral Conducting. Since its founding in 1979 by Prof. Max Frey, more than 450 choristers have developed a wide-ranging repertoire, which they often pass on as choral conductors in their own choirs.

The concerts at our university are an integral part of the Munich concert calendar for a choir-loving audience. The choir often realises large concert projects in collaboration with the HSO München or the Institute for Historical Performance Practice of the University of Music and Theatre. Concert tours have also taken the Madrigalchor to Argentina, Belgium, France, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Austria, Scotland, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Hungary. In 2016, the choir travelled to Egypt and Oman, and in 2018 to the USA.

Numerous awards at international competitions as well as the cooperation with the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting), especially in the concert series »Paradisi Gloria«, but also cooperations with other cultural institutions testify to the high level of the choir. Internationally renowned conductors and ensembles such as Gunnar Eriksson, Trevor Pinnock and the Dave Brubeck Quartet have already worked with the choir. In 2014, the Madrigalchor won the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb (German Choir Competition) in the category of large mixed choirs, and in 2015 the choir won the category of »Adult Choirs« at the »Let the Peoples Sing« competition.
