Ya´qub Yonas Nathem El-Khaled

Ya’qub Yonas N. El-Khaled studied classical guitar, art song accompaniment on the classical guitar and historical plucked instruments, philosophy and musicology at the universities of Nijmegen and Würzburg. In 2019, he became a university assistant at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) and began work on his doctoral thesis. In this doctoral thesis, which he completed with distinction in 2022, he unravelled some of the mysteries of 16th-century lute music. Following further appointments as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the KUG, he moved in 2023 to the Musical Instrument Making programme at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, where he worked as a research assistant. Since April 2025, he has been a research assistant on the research project »Nazi Persecution and Music History: Revisions from a Biographical and Geographical Perspective« at the University of Music and Theatre Munich, and is working on a postdoctoral thesis on music journalism during the interwar period. His main areas of research include historical performance practice, the history and repertoire of plucked string instruments, the history of the art song and its interpretation, the history and repertoire of Arabic music, organological issues, and studies on oppression, persecution and anti-Semitism in the 20th century.
